Banana

Banana

Musa acuminata

Origin Indomalaya and Australia

Edibility In North America we commonly eat bananas raw and ripe. In many parts of the world they are enjoyed cooked in their unripe state as a delicious starch.

Characteristics The bananas in this garden are all dwarf varieties and will not get taller than you see. Regular varieties can be over 15 feet tall. Bananas plants are not trees but are in fact the largest herbaceous flowering plant. Once banana plants produce fruit they die and a new “pup” will spring up to take their place. Bananas love wet soil and lots of nitrogen.
