Dragon Fruit

Dragon Fruit

Selenicereus undatus

Origin Southern Mexico and Central America

Edibility Sometimes referred to as Pitaya, the fruit is hand-sized with a leathery outside that is red, pink, or yellow depending on the variety. The flesh is typically white with black seeds similar to those of a kiwi. The flavor is mild - slightly sweet, slightly sour with an interesting texture.

Characteristics Dragon fruit plants are in the cactus family and require less water than other plants. They mature in five years and produce flowers overnight, relying on nocturnal pollinators such as bats and moths. A mature plant can produce fruit 3-6 times a year.
