Edibility Large fruit averaging 1-6 pounds. Technically a berry, mameys have a brown skin similar to a sapodilla with firm orange flesh surrounding one or more large brown seeds. The taste of the flesh is unique, and has been compared to almond, and cinnamon.
Characteristics Mameys are an interesting tree reaching around 30-40 feet, with a strong trunk and sparse, heavy limbs. The fruit take a long time to mature from flowers (1-2 years) but a mature tree can produce several hundred pounds of fruit. Different varieties fruit in different seasons allowing for fruit production all year long.
