Mango
Mangifera indica
Origin Mangos originated in Southern Asia but are now grown worldwide in tropical climates.
Edibility Mango is a “stone fruit” having a pit like a peach. Surrounding this is smooth flesh that is yellow or orange in color with flavor profiles that are probably the most diverse of all fruit. There are hundreds of varieties, each with it’s own unique flavor.
Characteristics Mango trees are hardy trees that can grow quite large (some over 100 feet tall) and live and fruit for hundreds of years. In Florida our mangos fruit in the summer, with different strains maturing early (May-June) and late (July-August). Most of today’s best mangos are grafted, so planting trees from seeds is not likely to yield the fruit you desire.
