Everyday Green

As every homeowner knows, there is always something that needs to be done. Fixtures wear out, appliances break down, maintenance and cleaning are never-ending. The good news is that these are all opportunities to green your home!

Let’s start with plumbing fixtures. The EPAct of 1992 required manufacturers to develop low flow toilets with a gallon per flush rate of 1.6. If you have a toilet older than that, you may be using up to 3.4 gallons per flush. Why not replace that old toilet and save water and money every day? But it’s not just toilets. Today’s faucets and shower heads come with low-flow aerators, reducing water use by up to 50% compared to old fixtures.

Electronic appliances have also made great advances. Did you know that a modern induction cooktop transfers 90% of its energy to your food as opposed to just 40% from a gas stove? All that efficiency without the dangerous chemicals from gas makes this a clear choice for your next range. Other new high-efficiency appliances such as refrigerators and dishwashers, washer dryers and hot water heaters can save up to 50% on energy use. Look for Energy Star certifications on the labels to learn about these savings.

You would have to be hiding under a rock to have missed the LED revolution in lighting. Led Lights use at least 75% less energy than incandescent lights and last 25 times longer! Replace your old lightbulbs and fixtures with LED lighting.

It’s time to go green when you clean! Household cleaning products can contain toxic and hazardous chemicals. To avoid this and use only safe products in your household, look for products with the Green Seal certification or the EPA’s Safer Choice on the label.
