Harnessing the power of the individual to save our reefs

It began with one person, our executive director, and the understanding that the decline in reef health mirrored the decline in long-spined seaurchin populations. From this understanding a strategy was born to help our reefs by helping the urchins.

  • A Special Place

Where could one find a dependable population of urchins for breeding, a facility that could handle the project, and scientists with the know how? Fortunately our director knew the perfect place: the Cape Eleuthera Institute at the Island School.

  • The Scientists

The strategy which was born in Florida now sailed across the gulfstream and resonated with two scientists in the Bahamas. Natalia and Nick understood the synergy that the sea urchins could bring to their coral restoration efforts.

  • The Donors

From Florida to the Bahamas and now to the mountains of Colorado. Two donors from thousands of miles away recognized the importance of this work and generously gave their support.
